Happy International Women’s Day 2020!

Tapputi – The first known chemist in history was a female!

Tapputi was a female chemist in Mesopotamia, Babylon, around 1200 BC. She is also called Tapputi-Belatekallim, the title Belatekallim means she was a female overseer of a palace. It is known that she was a chemist and perfumer, and she is as a matter of fact the first known chemist of the world!

Her name was mentioned on a cuneiform tablet, and she is described as a manufacturer of a perfume that used oils from petals, calamus, cyper grasses and myrrh. She added water or other solvents to the oil mixture and then distilled and filtered several times. There are also hints of a coworker on the same cuneiform tablet but parts of her name have been lost over time.

We like to remember her today, as one of the extraordinary women who paved the path for future distilling!

Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.
